Despite the advancement of wireless technology, many computer networks in the twenty-first century still depend on cables as the physical medium for data transmission. There are several different types of network cables, each with its own set of features.
Coaxial Cables
Coaxial cable (also known as coax) was commonly used to connect television sets to home antennas. Coaxial cable is also the standard cable that can be used in 10 Mbps Ethernet cables.
When 10 Mbps Ethernet was first introduced, networks usually used one of two types of coax cable, like thinnet (10BASE2) or thicknet (10BASE3 standard) (10BASE5). These cables had an inner copper wire of different thickness covered by insulation and another layer of shielding. The stiffness made it difficult for network administrators to deploy and manage thinnet and thicknet.
Twisted Pair Cables
Twisted pair turned into a significant Ethernet cabling standard in the 1990s, beginning with 10 Mbps (10BASE-T, also recognized as Category 3 or Cat3) and progressing to enhanced versions for 100 Mbps (100BASE-TX, Cat5, and Cat5e) and higher speeds up to 10 Gbps (10GBASE-T). To reduce electromagnetic interference, Ethernet twisted pair cables have up to eight wires wound together in pairs.
Fiber Optics
Fiber optic network cables utilize strands of glass and light waves to distribute electrical signals instead of insulated metal wires. While being made of glass, these network cables are bendable.
