Fremont, CA: Until a few years ago, self-driving cars were a thing in sci-fi movies, but today, the first semi-autonomous vehicles with a variety of aid technologies are already on the roads. Additionally, autonomous driving is no longer a pipe dream. Enabling a speedier link across transportation systems, the 5G network will provide new application choices that will further the development of autonomous vehicles. In the future, not only will they be able to make independent judgments, but they will also communicate and work together.

Interconnectedness promoting intelligent transport infrastructure
Rapid and dependable communication networks, such as LTE and 5G, are the basis for autonomous driving. At the 5G Automotive Association (5GAA), experts from diverse industries are establishing the fundamentals of common standards to ensure that the new mobile communication standard satisfies the specific requirements for integrating the various transport users and for automated driving.
Linking cars' digital and location-based services can significantly enhance our driving comfort thanks to wireless technology and internet connectivity. The vehicle's navigation relies on regular data updates, such as accurate route maps and updates in unforeseen traffic conditions, such as congestion, rain, or black ice. Maintenance and other status reports can be retrieved and transmitted in conjunction with driver apps and cloud systems. Even in emergencies or remote-controlled driving at low speeds, these functionalities are currently possible with mobile edge computing based on LTE at transmission rates of up to 300 megabits per second and latencies of less than 100 milliseconds. In the future, 5G will provide digital in-car services with even higher quality.
5G for the expansion of automated systems
Obviously, safety considerations are also a priority when driving an automobile. In addition to the capabilities of 4G, 5G delivers unique safety-related features that no other wireless network can give.
When unforeseen conditions arise, automated systems approach their limits. If there is any question, the "autopilot" will deactivate the system for safety reasons. The work and responsibility of driving would be returned to the human driver by an automated vehicle. However, if the vehicle is not taken over by the driver or not taken over quickly enough, the vehicle will be pushed to the side of the road in a secure driving mode.
With 5G, for instance, the car may be remotely controlled by an external operator acting as a traffic controller. However, remote control by an operator is difficult without a 5G network, providing crucial features like rapid reaction times and guaranteed network resources.
