The word digital forensics originates from the umbrella term computer forensics. It is now a different applied discipline devoted to investigating computer-related crimes and ways of locating, collecting, and securing digital evidence. Any data found on digital devices are handled by digital forensics. Digital forensics has advanced from unstructured operations primarily carried out by hobbyists to a well-organized, recognized applied discipline that identifies, evaluates, and retains entire data on digital devices.

The core applications of forensics are the examination and investigation of events, including computer information as the target of an attack, a computer as a tool for committing a crime, and gathering, storing, and protecting any digital evidence. In addition, the expert analysis findings are utilized in court to support or refute a hypothesis.

Network forensics
Network forensics aims to track, record, and analyze all network activity. For example, network specialists examine traffic and activities in security breaches, cyberattacks, or other cyber incidents.
Computer forensics

Email forensics
Analysts that particularise in email forensics remove valuable information from emails. The identities of the senders and receivers, time stamps, the content of the messages, sources, and metadata are all instances of this information. Mobile device forensics
Special specialists in this sector can retrieve data from smartphones, SIM cards, mobile phones, GPS devices, tablets, PDAs, and gaming consoles. For example, this analysis is needed to recover audio and visual data, contacts, and call logs from devices used as evidence in court.
