Subsystems are the standardized components that make up hierarchical cabling. Since these subsystems are usually distributed across a building, it is critical to know where they will be in the company. Structured cabling is made up of six distinct types of subsystems.
Entrance Facilities: The actual boundary between the wiring of the premises and the telephone company's wiring.
Equipment Rooms: Equipment or consolidation points are housed in rooms within the building or on campus.
Backbone Cabling: Inter and intra-building cable connections.
Horizontal Cabling: Telecommunications room wiring that links to outlets or work areas on the floor.
Telecommunications Room: Combines the backbone cabling and horizontal cabling.
Work Area Components: The connections between the end-equipment user's and the horizontal cabling system's outlets.
