5G wireless connections are projected to transfer audio, video, text, and image data at speeds of up to 300 GHz, enabling the battlefield to manufacture data on demand.
FREMONT, CA: Fifth-generation wireless communications—more commonly referred to as 5G—will enable far more than quick-connect phone calls and speedy movie downloads, especially for the US military. Indeed, 5G has the potential to realize what military officials have referred to as the "info sphere" since the 1980s. This access to data from video, speech, sensors, targeting, surveillance, and even the sights on infantry weapons is fast and straightforward for everyone who needs it.

5G holds the promise of ubiquitous high-speed data connectivity, which will enable significant improvements in intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR); faster and more secure command and control; more efficient logistics; swarming crewless vehicles; and widespread use of virtual and augmented reality for simulation, training, and mission rehearsal. 5G holds the promise of instant situational awareness anywhere on Earth, intelligent hypersonic weapons capable of dynamic retargeting, rich access to mission-critical data at the cutting edge of the battlefield, and unmanned aircraft capable of safely flying alongside passenger aircraft in commercial airspace.
5G, on the other hand, will not come quickly, swiftly, or cheaply. Compared to the broader 5G goal for the military, commercial interests, and the consumer, the technology is still in its infancy—notwithstanding the cell phone company advertising on television. Realizing the 5G future will require time, extensive testing, experimentation, and investment—and a lot more cell towers than society currently has.
5G might enhance intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance systems and signal processing for the military, enabling new command and control applications and expedite logistics. Additionally, 5G may provide widespread access to augmented and virtual reality, 5G smart warehouses, distributed command and control, and dynamic spectrum use for the military.

5G military capabilities
According to a report published last May by the US Department of Defense (DOD), 5G can alter military capabilities. According to the paper, "ubiquitous high-speed connectivity will also revolutionize the way military operate." "Tomorrow's war fighters will use local and expeditionary 5G networks to move massive amounts of data to connect remote sensors and weapons into a dense, resilient battlefield network.”This data-rich environment will power powerful algorithms that will enable commanders to understand better, shape, and adapt to complex and contested physical and information environments," the report continues. "Low-latency communications will enable the development of new generations of unmanned and autonomous military systems in all sectors. The war fighter will get much-enhanced access to data at the tactical edge, enabling even small forces to produce strategic effects."
