Although network workers frequently use the terms Ethernet switch, network switch, hub, and router interchangeably, each device has a distinct purpose on the network.

Although some routers are designed as a combination network switch and router, a router on its own performs a distinct function from a network switch. The switch, hub, and router will all be distinct devices in a modular network configuration.
A Comparison of an Ethernet Switch vs. Hub
A hub functions similarly to an Ethernet switch, wired to the office or home network devices. A switch will monitor the plugged-in devices accessing the network by their Media Access Control (MAC) addresses, and transport received frames (packets of data transmitted in a single unit) to the appropriate port without generating network slowness. A hub will divide its bandwidth evenly amongst all of its ports. When only a single PC or a few devices are broadcasting on the network, this is not a problem; but, when several devices are active on a 10/100Mbps hub, this can impact network performance.
Comparing a Network Switch vs. Router
A router functions by linking two networks through a modem. The router is often located at the network's entrance and is responsible for routing or forwarding data packets throughout the network. The most frequent connections use LANs (Local Area Networks) or WANs (Wide Area Networks) (Wide Area Networks).
Since data packets contain destination IP addresses, routers and modems can use ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol) to find the most effective way to transfer data packets over the network to their final destination.
A switch enables users on a network to exchange files and printers with both wired and wireless devices that have joined the network. While switches do not have built-in network security, routers typically include hardware-based firewall protection that is individually adjustable for office or home networks to provide optimal connectivity.
Ethernet Switch vs. Router Comparison
While a network switch can link many devices and networks to expand the LAN, a router allows multiple network devices to share a single IP address. The Ethernet switch creates networks, whereas the router enables connections between networks. Most routers feature a single LAN port and a single WAN port, whereas a switch will have many ports for LAN devices such as PCs and printers to interact. The router will provide PCs and other devices access to the internet and other networks.
Additionally, a wireless router can send a Wi-Fi signal to which wireless devices can connect. This is especially helpful for allowing laptops and mobile devices to connect to the Wi-Fi network for internet access and for providing access to a Wi-Fi-enabled printer that anyone enrolled in the network may use. The devices connected to an Ethernet switch via an Ethernet cable inserted into its Ethernet port are limited.
Various hubs, routers, and switches can be incorporated into a wired or wireless network. If enterprises have a small number of devices on their LAN, a hub may be a suitable central connection point. If they require additional connections, an Ethernet switch may be preferable over a hub. The reason is that there is less lag when using the switch with several devices on a hub since only active devices will receive received frames.
Now that enterprises understand how an Ethernet switch works and the functions of a hub and router, they can utilize this knowledge to determine the optimal configuration for their home or office network for the fastest connectivity to the internet and Wi-Fi speeds.
