The project will unite more than 75 district sites, allowing the district’s 35,000 students and staff to access network speeds of up to 100 Gigabits per second.
FREMONT, CA: WANRack, a provider of fiber-optic Wide-Area Networks (WANs), has been chosen by one of Kansas’ largest school systems to update its broadband infrastructure. The firm has already started building a 52.4-mile fiber network for Olathe Public Schools, which has the most extensive IT network in the Kansas City metropolitan region.

WANRack is featured among Enterprise Networking Magazine’s “Top Optical Networking Solution Providers-2021.” The project will unite more than 75 district sites, allowing the district’s 35,000 students and staff to access network speeds of up to 100 Gigabits per second. “Our strategy has been to build private networks for cities, counties, municipalities or school districts across America,” said Rob Oyler, Founder and CEO, WANRack.
Olathe Public Schools won all three contracts–for WAN, Internet Access, and Voice over IP (VoIP) services–to WANRack following a robust RFP process that garnered proposals from a wide range of vendors. The new private fiber network can deliver 100Gbps, which is more than ten times faster than the network it replaces. Furthermore, the new WANRack network saves the district a significant amount of money, reducing monthly expenditures by more than half at current network bandwidth levels.
As the district makes use of higher network speeds, the cost savings over the present service provider will continue to grow. Furthermore, the WANRack solution saves hundreds of thousands of dollars in bandwidth expansion costs that would have been required with the present supplier.
“The WANRack network is incredibly faster and dramatically more cost-efficient than anything we have previously been able to achieve or even imagine,” said Matt Vrlenich, Chief Technology Officer, Olathe Public Schools. “I highly recommend that all districts look into upgrading to a WANRack network. I cannot speak highly enough about the company, its expertise, and the superiority of its offering.”
Olathe Public Schools has 36 elementary schools, ten middle schools, five high schools, data centers, athletic facilities, and other learning centers located throughout the cities of Olathe, Overland Park, and Lenexa. Enrollment has increased in the district for 55 years in a row. The WANRack fiber network guarantees a future-proof solution that can keep up with future networking demands while also allowing the district to boost bandwidth as needed with little to no additional cost.
“We are thrilled to expand our impact in the Midwest and boost the educational experience for the students of Olathe Public Schools,” said Oyler. “This network is the last network Olathe Public Schools will ever need, and it literally lays the groundwork for WANRack to provide high-capacity Internet and VoIP services for any district in the greater Kansas City metro area.”
WANRack is now operational in 23 different states. From Florida to Washington state, from Arizona to Connecticut, the company’s extensive fiber-optic networks span the country. Since 2005, the WANRack executive management team has built and delivered over 200 fiber-optic WANs.
