A firewall is a type of network security equipment that follows the security guidelines established by an organization by monitoring and filtering both inbound and outbound network traffic. In essence, it serves as a barrier between a private internal network and the open Internet.
Much like you would use fencing to keep intruders out of your home, firewalls are intended to secure computer networks. Network security solutions called firewalls stop unwanted users from connecting to a network. To identify and prevent cyberattacks, either a hardware or software device filters incoming and outgoing network data based on predetermined criteria.
Both home and business environments employ firewalls. They are an essential part of network security. The majority of operating systems come with a simple firewall. However, better security is offered by using a third-party firewall application.
The Working of a Firewall
Within a private network, firewalls filter network traffic. Based on a set of rules, it determines which traffic should be permitted or prohibited. Consider the firewall as a gatekeeper stationed at the point of entry on your computer, allowing access to your network only to reliable sources or IP addresses.
Only incoming traffic set to accept is accepted by a firewall. It distinguishes between legitimate and malicious communication and, based on pre-established security criteria, either permits or prohibits particular data packets.
These criteria are based on several elements, such as source, destination, content, and so forth, indicated by the packet data. They stop traffic originating from dubious sources to prevent cyberattacks.
For instance, the picture below illustrates how a firewall permits legitimate traffic to enter a user's private network.
In contrast, the firewall in the example below prevents harmful traffic from accessing the private network, shielding the user's network from potential cyberattacks.
