The difficulties associated with managing networks during a pandemic have caused many enterprises to postpone SD-WAN installations
FREMONT, CA: Before the wave of COVID-19 lockdowns and work-from-home orders that began in early 2020, 61 percent of organizations reported that they had commenced an SD-WAN rollout. By the second half of 2021, only 36 percent of organizations had adopted or were in the process of installing SD-WAN, according to Nemertes Research. The pandemic brought deployments to a halt. While some firms have begun preparations, most SD-WAN implementations remain on hold as the pandemic continues. Additionally, technological advancements and the rise of permanent hybrid work have complicated the network environment that several firms with fully integrated SD-WAN services have discontinued operation.

As the first signs of a post-pandemic world begin to take shape, network experts should keep an eye on the following some SD-WAN trends:
SD-WAN as a service
Early adopters confronted with intractable WAN issues implemented do-it-yourself SD-WAN. This strategy was effective in service delivery and management burden reduction. Following on the heels of DIY SD-WAN pioneers with quickly evolving and improving products, successive waves of enterprises with fewer challenges emerged.
Enterprises with outsourced WANs eventually began to demand similar enhancements to their services and some new flexibility in terms of connection mix and match. Service providers realized increased profit margins as a result of easier management.
SD-WAN migration also appeared to be a natural place for some IT shops to outsource their WAN operations completely. Managed SD-WAN deployments have grown quickly over the last three years, from less than 8 percent in 2017 to 50 percent by 2020.
Essentially, each managed network service provider presented at least one—and frequently more—SD-WAN alternatives. Offerings included managed deployments of do-it-yourself technology and carrier-specific, network-based portfolios built around the carrier's network architecture and virtualized infrastructure.
A managed WAN's ultimate purpose is to provide network-as-a-service (NaaS). SD-WAN is currently a standard feature of the majority of NaaS operators. Over the last several years, NaaS providers have redesigned their products to include all of the essential characteristics of an SD-WAN service.
Among the capabilities offered by SD-WAN-as-a-service suppliers are redundancy and connection options, policy-driven route optimization, and traffic prioritization. Providers had already built various SD-WAN-style management, optimization, and redundancy elements into their middle-mile infrastructures, and all that was needed was to extend the capabilities.
Within the broader ongoing shift toward anything-as-a-service purchasing, anticipate that the need for managed SD-WAN will drive broader adoption of NaaS products that are now SD-WAN as a service, both vertically and by company size.
AI in SD-WAN
AI is making a strong appearance in SD-WAN—or, at the very least, in SD-WAN marketing materials. Expect to see SD-WAN options blended with AI from service providers and vendors. Along with optimizing traffic path selection, AI may improve policy definitions, assist with debugging, and provide smarter performance and security monitoring.
Network professionals must decide whether AI applications ease network management for users and administrators compared to earlier software designs that govern these operations.
