Phosphorus Discovers and Disables Government-Prohibited Devices using xIoT Security Capabilities

Providing proactive and full-scope security for the extended Internet of Things (xIoT), Phosphorus revealed new security features that will allow organizations to identify and monitor the presence of xIoT devices considered significant security risks by the U.S. government. Remotely disabling and removing devices from the network is also included in the new features.

The researchers at Phosphorus Labs have found that many organizations need help identifying all of their xIoT devices, so they may not realize they have banned devices hidden inside their networks. Researchers found that 80 percent of enterprises need help identifying most of their xIoT devices, and customer estimates are consistently 40-60 percent off.

Phosphoruss security update follows the FCCs ban on the sale or importation of devices made by several Chinese manufacturers that it considers to pose an ineffective risk to the national security of the United States or the security or safety of United States persons. The Covered List includes video surveillance and telecommunications equipment produced by Huawei Technologies, ZTE Corporation, Hytera Communications, Hangzhou Hikvision Digital Technology, and Dahua Technology (and their subsidiaries and affiliates).

To minimize the potential risks associated with banned xIoT technologies before they are removed from the network, organizations will need to take specific actions at the device level, such as changing passwords, disabling services, and reducing connectivity.
