Organizations use private wireless networks for wireless broadband connectivity, similar to a public wireless network.
FREMONT, CA: All of the same parts are required for a private wireless network as they are for a public network. Spectrum is required. It can lease spectrum from a carrier or buy it from another spectrum owner. It can operate over an unlicensed spectrum, such as the Citizens Broadband Radio Service (CBRS) band's general authorized access (GAA) layer. It can also run on spectrum owned by the company that is constructing the private wireless network. Because organizations were able to get spectrum, private wireless networks have been popular in Europe for some time. Now that CBRS licensed spectrum is available in the United States, these networks are poised to take off.

A core is also required for a private wireless network. It could be a vendor's proprietary equipment, or disaggregated hardware and software from one or more suppliers, or even commodity gear running open-source software. A subscriber database and subscriber identity module (SIM) card administration are included in the core program. Another prerequisite for a private wireless network is SIM cards. Only SIM cards that have been activated for the private network will be able to connect, allowing complete control over how and who connects.
Other tasks provided by the core include traffic shaping, quality of service rules, billing and data plan rules, and network monitoring parameters. One of the advantages of a private wireless network is that network traffic is not routed through a central network in a different place. All traffic can remain on-premises, resulting in increased speed, latency, security, and privacy.
Radios and antennas are also required for a private wireless network. The CBRS Alliance in the United States maintains a list of equipment that has been certified to work on the CBRS spectrum. Citizens Broadband Radio Devices (CBSDs) is the name given to this type of equipment. Organizations can develop and maintain their own private wireless network, outsource it to a systems integrator, or outsource it to a mobile network operator.
