A traditional network is the conventional way of networking that uses fixed and dedicated hardware devices like routers and switches to manage network traffic. A traditional network is based on hardware network appliances. The most significant difference between SDN and traditional networking is that SDN is software-based while traditional networking is hardware-based. Unlike conventional switches, SDN also has the potential to better communicate with devices using the network.
With SDN, the control plane becomes software-based, enabling it to be accessed through a connected device. This access allows IT, administrators to handle traffic flow with greater detail from a centralized user interface (UI). This centralized location gives users greater control over how their networks work and how their networks are configured. The potential to quickly process different network configurations from a centralized UI is beneficial for network segmentation.
