While SDN is limited to a single network, SD-WAN enables SDN implementation on a much larger geographical scale. Businesses that require connectivity across several sites, particularly in the age of remote work, will benefit from using an SD-WAN solution.
SD-WAN enables organizations to centrally manage network endpoints, such as branch offices, hubs, data centers, home offices, point-of-sale sites, mobile devices, and consumer and industrial IoT. SD-WAN simplifies network configuration and maintenance by providing a control console via which an enterprise network manager can apply routing decisions, automate business policies, and monitor usage and performance in real-time.

SD-WAN automates the management of systems and processes by pushing policies, security, and customer configurations to the Customer Premises Equipment (CPE). This reduces manual work and simplifies the system and process management. Additionally, SD-WAN enables network traffic segmentation and prioritization via a control dashboard.
Containment and protection: SD-WAN enables control over the phone, data, and video traffic at the application level, making it appropriate for each Software as a Service (SaaS), cloud, or multicloud solution. A single graphical user interface offers rapid configuration and deployment, while integrated workflows safeguard workloads.
Major SD-WAN vendors have begun to offer what Gartner refers to as Secure Access Service Edge (SASE), a platform that combines SD-WAN and security services such as Next-Generation Firewalls (NGFW) and FWaaS (Firewall as a Service).
Cost-effectiveness: Not all sites require the same level of connectivity; some require high-speed, low-latency fiber connections, while others can function with slower connections. SD-WAN supports traffic prioritization, which provides greater flexibility and control over costs.
