FREMONT, CA: With many new players entering the ecosystem, the debate looks likely to get more humid between the technology lovers, people focusing on simplicity and operational aspects, and advocates of machine intelligence. Several trends will significantly impact the way optical networks are built. Below given trends will offer massive potential for change in the way systems are built and operated. Edge ROADMs
This trend reflects how the metro optical line systems are designed and built to meet operational demands. Improving automation in the metro, infrastructure expansions in readiness for 5G, and the expectation that connectivity services can be delivered quickly all create the need for deployment of edge ROADMs that meet metro cost points. That's why network operators need to select ROADM technology for the metro carefully. As opposed to the core network deployments, metro prerequisites like the compactness, simplicity, and low first-in cost need to be achieved. On top of that, the flex-grid capability has now finally become mandatory for ROADMs in general to support high baud-rate signals.

More operators of the telecom and enterprise networks are turning to optical network disaggregation. Most of the operators choose the model of disaggregating the entire visual line system from terminals or optics. The benefit is that network disaggregation decouples the innovation cycles. Enhancement on the terminal side is much faster than the photonic layer, so breakdown enables network providers to take advantage of the latest innovation. However, this shift to open and disaggregated networking comes at the cost of complexity with system integration, management, and orchestration.
