FREMONT, CA: Most of the workers currently use Windows-based computers for their jobs, whether those are desktop computers at a work location, laptops, or remote/virtual desktops where the user's Windows desktop runs as a virtual machine in the data center somewhere. The most raised question is VDI or VPN. It is impossible to understand whether VDI or VPN is appropriate for the answers; each can be VDI or VPN depending on the situation.
The phrase VDI is described traditionally as a scenario where the user remotely accesses to Windows 10-based desktop running as VM on a server in the datacenter. Along with traditional VDI, this can also mean multi-session RDSH hosted desktops or VDI or RDSH technologies running in the cloud that the users pay for as a service.
[vendor_logo_first]VDI technologies have various characteristics, like getting connected to a VDI desktop that does not need any IT expertise at the user's house. The user can log in from the web page, and they alone can access their full Windows corporate desktop in minutes. Next one is the built-in security. The applications and data are saved on servers in the office or the cloud. Therefore the users don't have to concern about the data being stolen or even lost.
The VPN option essentially means that the users use regular laptops at home, and the apps they use are installed locally on their laptops. VPN's attractive aspects are, first and foremost, of the users already have organizational, laptops, they can necessarily have nothing to do. The second attraction is that the option does not need a lot of back end setup or any kind of purchases.
Both the VDI desktop and a physical laptop need lots of engineering to get them to work. With VDI, the users only have to think about the servers, disk images, app layering, user profiles, login times, number of monitors, pixels, GPUs, and the bandwidth, and client updates. The same is true for Windows laptops that can be connected using the VPN option. The desktop architects spend months or years designing the image, thinking about how the apps are installed and configured, setting up the security tools, disk encryption, software patches, monitoring, updated, and VPN tunnels.
