Network protocols are formal standards and policies that consist of rules, procedures, and formats that specify how two or more devices communicate via a network.

Network monitoring protocols are used to track and report data and traffic going to and from network connections—between a host and a client device. The collected data is processed and graphically displayed via a graphical user interface (GUI) to utilize it to manage the network's activity.
Numerous network monitoring protocols have been created and provided by various manufacturers, with some combining the capabilities of multiple protocols into one. All protocols share five fundamental functions: discovery, mapping, monitoring, notification, and reporting.
Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP)
SNMP is the most widely used standard protocol for querying relevant objects to extract data from network-connected devices such as switches, WLAN controllers, servers, printers, routers, and modems. The data collected is used to construct metrics for monitoring the network's performance based on interface status, CPU use, bandwidth utilization, and network latency, among other metrics.
Due to SNMP's simplicity, companies can easily design SNMP agents for use in various network-based products/applications. SNMP is best suited for allowing management information sharing within a network management system (NMS) between management applications and agents.
A critical component of SNMP's functioning is the Management Information Base (MIB), a catalog of objects that SNMP uses to identify a device's status. MIB assigns and keeps a unique identifier to each item, which IT managers can use to discover objects that require monitoring or extracting information from the object in the future. The MIB data is supplied by management agents
embedded in managed devices that gather and store information about the device's operations and state.
SNMP retrieves and processes stored data before relaying it to the network management application (the manager). Following that, the manager uses a graphical user interface to show the information on the management system, informing the IT administrators of pertinent information. Network Management Application software is critical for notifying IT of events and assisting in the network's protection against failures.
