And while it is tempting to refer to innovative new business delivery formats as digital transformation, in reality, these initial change initiatives cascade down through an organization's entire infrastructure, necessitating secondary and tertiary overhauls to support the original and likely more publicly visible objectives. IT leaders recognize that old networking approaches will significantly hinder their digital objectives, but they struggle to establish the economic case for infrastructure modernization.

The economics of network transformation
Network and security transformation frequently entails migrating mission-critical operations to the cloud. The 'push' justifications for this include cost savings, tighter integrations, increased deployment speed, and scalability without the need to re-architect each time a big change is required. 'Pull' motives include enhanced security posture, scaled innovation, and the potential for advanced data analytics.
Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) is a Gartner-created word describing an ideal network and security transition state. Users, data, and applications are increasingly located outside of the traditional data center in the cloud and must be managed secured appropriately.
To gain internal support for SASE projects, CIOs and CISOs must examine the tangible economic benefits of transformation; organizations must set aside the promise of 'guesstimate' growth rates and instead calculate the immediate and short-term economic benefits that can be unlocked through network and security transformation.
For instance, in a conventional network security configuration based on SWG and VPN, everything a remote worker does is routed through the organization's data center, where threat and data protection policies can be enforced. With the bulk of applications supplied in the cloud and consumed by employees outside of the corporate network, security has become the primary reason for traffic to be routed through the corporate data center. This means that with a transformation project that enables security policies to be executed inline in the cloud, investment in network bandwidth, appliance capacity, and specialist support hours can be immediately reduced.
