FREMONT, CA: Though 5G receives the most attention, Wi-Fi 6 devices are quietly outselling 5G devices by a considerable margin and are expected to do so for at least the next few years. Wi-Fi 6, like 5G, will play an essential role in the future of wireless connectivity for consumers and businesses. Smartphones, tablets, and PCs are among the most common Wi-Fi 6 devices, but the technology is also found in wireless cameras, smart home devices, game consoles, and AR/VR headsets. Given the massive amount of attention and promotion committed to 5G, one may assume that next-generation wireless networks in the enterprise will be virtually entirely focused on 5G, with Wi-Fi 6 having a minor role at most.

Implementing technologies for greater mobility
For advanced wireless projects, businesses are testing or installing Wi-Fi 6 and 5G at the same time. It isn't entirely surprising, given that Wi-Fi 6 and 5G have certain similarities but also differ in strengths. Higher speeds, lower latency, and improved device density and network capacity are all possible with both technologies. The contrasts are found in range, mobility support, and cost. Wi-Fi 6 and its predecessors are typically used for smaller, less expensive local area networks, such as connectivity within homes and offices. In contrast, cellular networks, such as 5G, are used for indoor and outdoor wide area networks and are frequently used for devices that move across large geographic areas.
One step towards uninterrupted services
Unlike previous wireless generations, Wi-Fi 6 and 5G are meant to function together flawlessly. The wireless industry appears to be moving toward a future where devices may travel securely and seamlessly between all types of wireless networks. Future network standards are being co-developed by industry organizations and standards bodies, allowing for the convergence of cellular and non-cellular technologies and integrating Wi-Fi 6 into core 5G networks. Improved traffic control on factory floors and the ability to provide uninterrupted service for smart city and edge applications are predicted benefits of an integrated architecture.
