From Networks to Talent: Life as Verizon's Technology Ambassador

As the Chief Technology Ambassador at Verizon, could you describe a typical day in your professional life? Additionally, it would be greatly appreciated if you could provide insights into your career.

I began my career at Bell Atlantic in 1990, immediately after graduating. Over time, Bell Atlantic transitioned into Verizon. I have remained with the company for an impressive span of 33 years, which is relatively uncommon today, where people frequently change positions. With an engineering degree, I was drawn to the field of communications, finding it more captivating than other opportunities that came my way. Little did I know then what the next three decades would hold as we witnessed remarkable transformations. Back then, it was the dawn of the digital age, with the internet still in its infancy and mobile phones virtually nonexistent. The landscape was completely different 33 years ago.

While I won't delve into the intricate details of each role I undertook, I can attest to the incredible technological and network transformations I had the privilege of contributing to. Throughout my career, I worked in operations, engineering, networking, planning, and product development, focusing heavily on the technical aspects. Initially, I was involved in our wireline business, particularly in the early stages of transitioning from copper to fiber and deploying fiber-to-the-home services, eventually becoming an industry-leading home network offering called FiOS. Later on, I transitioned to the wireless sector, before the launch of 4G LTE, during the era of EV-DO 3G. I played a part in introducing our 4G LTE service and now our 5G service, solidifying our network leadership in wireless and ensuring quality, reliability, and superior performance across our wireless network. Subsequently, I served as the Chief Technology Officer of Verizon Wireless.

Following that role, I assumed responsibility for all engineering aspects of the combined wireless and wireline operations as the company underwent various stages, including transitioning from a joint venture with Vodafone to full ownership. Later, I took charge of product management across all business units within Verizon. This involved overseeing our well-known wireless services, mobility offerings for consumers, as well as our wireline services, such as FiOS and other home-based and enterprise solutions. Our enterprise business serves top Fortune 500 companies, governments, universities, and educational institutions, providing them with mission-critical services.

In the past year, I embarked on a new strategic role called the Chief Technology Ambassador. This role holds great importance despite having a relatively small team compared to my previous positions. Its primary objective is to address the current shortage of technical talent in our industry and the broader global context. Our focus lies in inspiring, attracting, developing, and retaining the right technical talent, strongly emphasizing fostering diversity. The technology sector needs more diversity, and it is crucial to ensure that we can acquire individuals with the requisite skills, in the right numbers, and with the desired diversity mix. By doing so, we can enable Verizon to scale, grow, and achieve our ambitious goals as technology continues to evolve.

In pursuing enhancing connectivity and wireless services for your customers, could you please elaborate on some of the significant challenges you have faced in your role?

Over the years, the technology landscape has witnessed numerous transformations, particularly in wireless connectivity. I recall the evolution from 2G to 3G and eventually to 4G. In the early days of 2G, mobile phones were limited to essential functions, often humorously described as having only two buttons: send and end. However, with the advent of 3G, we began to experience limited internet access and early applications that expanded the phone's utility beyond mere calls. The widespread adoption of 4G revolutionized the mobile experience, offering consumers and businesses many services and capabilities. It has become an integral part of people's lives, with businesses utilizing mobile services to engage customers and empower their workforce.

These advancements were driven by technological progress, but deploying them reliably and at scale while ensuring customer satisfaction and value, presented its challenges. Collaboration within Verizon and the broader ecosystem became crucial in making it all work seamlessly. When asked about the major challenges encountered, it's difficult to pinpoint a single one. Deploying the network, for instance, often involved navigating complex processes to obtain permits and secure ideal locations for optimal service coverage. Working with tower companies, utilities, municipalities, and society, we strived to educate and adapt our approaches to ensure widespread service availability.

Deploying new technologies also meant considering additional elements, such as new radios on towers, handset upgrades, and integrating various components. Verizon excelled in deploying forward-thinking networks, considering present needs and future technological advancements. This encompassed strategic decisions on-site and infrastructure design with provisions for future technology changes, like fiber backhaul and backup power generators to maintain reliability during adverse weather or other emergencies. Naturally, budget allocation played a significant role in these endeavors.

While deploying networks presents challenges, it is an area where Verizon has demonstrated expertise and proficiency. Over time, the challenges may vary, but the core objective remains consistent: efficiently and cost-effectively deploying a network that offers reliable, high-quality service valued by customers, businesses, and society. As technology progressed, considerations shifted from deploying 4G LTE over the 700 MHz spectrum to encompassing additional spectrum bands for 5G, such as millimeter wave and C-band. Each generation brings unique considerations, but the overarching challenge remains the same—delivering a robust network that meets customers' evolving demands and provides exceptional service.

How does Verizon address developing and implementing sustainable and environmentally conscious solutions? Please provide information about any specific strategies or ongoing projects in this area. If so, please elaborate on the process and technology elements that Verizon has been utilizing to ensure the success of these projects.

ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) initiatives are integral to our core operations. At Verizon, we have emerged as a leader in providing sustainable solutions, not only in our network deployment practices but also in our overall energy usage, recycling efforts, and material selection for consumer products. This commitment also extends to our retail stores, demonstrating the breadth of our dedication.

Regarding our network infrastructure, the demand for data continues to grow each year. A recent development is the need for data to be closer to end users, resulting in the proliferation of equipment and network expansion beyond large central data centers. This expansion encompasses edge compute locations, cell site locations, and in-building locations, encompassing various aspects of our daily lives and workplaces. Consequently, power and space requirements have also increased.

Ensuring efficient power consumption has been a crucial focus for us. We have implemented various solutions, including geothermal and solar power, to effectively meet the energy needs of our cell sites, edge locations, and switches. Moreover, we constantly seek ways to optimize space utilization to minimize our carbon footprint. Our approach encompasses diverse strategies and solutions to achieve these goals.

What advice would you offer emerging industry leaders?

When we engage with various CIOs, CTOs, and industry professionals, it becomes evident that they have concerns about ensuring their workforce possesses the right skill sets. Technological advancements are occurring rapidly in terms of wireless technologies, like the transition from 4G to 5G to 6G and the widespread adoption of software-enabled solutions. Additionally, emerging technologies such as generative AI have quickly gained prominence, reaching even the general population.

As leaders, CIOs, CTOs, and CEOs must consider aligning their current workforce with the skills necessary for the future. This challenge extends beyond technical roles and impacts all aspects of the workforce, including sales, marketing, HR, legal, and more. As technology evolves, having a degree of tech-savviness across the entire workforce becomes increasingly vital, as it can yield positive effects in various work areas.

The demand for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) graduates grows at 25 to 35% per year. Unfortunately, data from our research and collaborations with McKinsey and others have revealed that we are not producing enough STEM graduates to meet this demand. While the demand increases exponentially, the number of college STEM graduates remains below 10%. This shortage of skilled professionals necessitates efforts to retrain and upskill existing employees.

In addressing this challenge, diversity plays a crucial role. Numerous studies have demonstrated that diverse teams yield superior outcomes. However, the computer science and engineering fields have experienced a decline and stagnant diversity, respectively, over the past two decades. This crisis demands focused interventions, including initiatives to inspire the next generation, spanning elementary, middle, and high school education. Verizon has implemented impactful programs in this regard and remains committed to making a difference.

Furthermore, efforts must be made to retrain and upskill individuals left behind, providing them with the necessary training and skills to participate in the new digital economy. Collaborations with colleges and universities are essential to ensure the curriculum aligns with the evolving workplace's requirements.

Once a talented workforce is acquired, retention becomes crucial. While Verizon, as a company, excels in this area, the current job market offers numerous options for skilled professionals. Hence, it is vital to find, attract, hire, grow, and retain talent, particularly considering the importance of diversity. Companies must be intentional and strategic throughout talent acquisition and retention, recognizing that it extends beyond simply recruiting on campuses.
